Metro Vancouver Transit Police
2016 – 2024
It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of retired Police Service Dog Diesel, who crossed the rainbow bridge at the age of 10.
Canine Diesel proudly served the Metro Vancouver Transit Police from 2016 to 2024, specializing in explosive detection. Throughout his distinguished seven-and-a-half-year career, Diesel wasn’t just a canine officer — he was courage on four legs. A loyal partner. A quiet guardian who stood watch over the citizens of Metro Vancouver, always ready, always willing, and never asking for anything in return but the chance to do his job.
Diesel gave everything he had to keep others safe. He searched tirelessly, stood fearlessly, and served selflessly. He cleared thousands of buses, train cars, terminals, and stations — from the SeaBus to the SkyTrain — and covered an area greater than some small nations. If it rolled, floated, or moved in Vancouver, Diesel likely had his nose on it.
But Diesel was more than a working dog. He was a hero with a tail, a companion with a badge, and a symbol of the very best of policing — steadfast, skilled, and fiercely devoted. One of only a handful of police dogs in Canada trained to detect body-worn explosives, Diesel could locate threats even in crowded, high-traffic environments. It was a rare and specialized ability that placed him in a league of his own.
Known affectionately as “The Spinner” for his pre-shift excitement twirls, Diesel brought joy and personality to every deployment. Whether sweeping for international dignitaries or prepping venues for global celebrities — even Taylor Swift — he carried himself with the same professionalism and heart. His unique combination of discipline and charm made him unforgettable to all who met him.
Throughout it all, Diesel stood shoulder to shoulder with his beloved handler, Cst. Leanne Smith. Together, they faced danger, saved lives, and built an unbreakable bond forged in trust and mutual respect. Diesel was not only Leanne’s partner in service — he was her best friend, her family, her steadfast protector.
To those who knew him, Diesel was never just a working dog. He was family — a silent hero who never asked for praise but earned every ounce of it. A gentle soul who wore the badge with honour and left paw prints not just on the ground, but on the hearts of everyone he served beside.
We extend our deepest condolences to Leanne, her family, and Devon, as they grieve not just a partner, but a once-in-a-lifetime companion. A true best friend.
Diesel’s final chapter began in retirement with NED’S WISH, where he was celebrated as the first canine from the Transit Police to join their ranks. Though recently diagnosed with advanced cardiomyopathy, Diesel faced it with the same grace, bravery, and tail-wagging resilience he brought to every mission.
Now, as we say goodbye, we know this:
Rest easy, Diesel. Your watch is over. You wore the badge with honour. You stood tall, served fiercely, and loved deeply. Your legacy will live on — in stories, in hearts, and in the safety of the city you helped protect.
Thank you, Diesel. You were the very best of us.
