PSD Hemmi had a knack for smelling out guns and explosives during his tenure as a PSD, but he successfully transitioned this skill into smelling out treats in retirement. Born in 2008, Hemmi is one of the oldest dogs registered with Ned’s Wish. Don’t let his age fool you: he can keep up with the best of them.
Hemmi was born in Slovakia and began his law enforcement service in Canada in 2009, when he worked with the Durham Regional Police. Hemmi was not only an excellent explosive and gun detecting dog, but despite the fact that his name was not taken from the high performance car engines, he was also the fastest K9 in his unit. During one of the training tests, Hemmi’s recorded speed was 51 km/h and rising. Hemmi also set a record for the longest track, when he followed a suspect for over 8 kilometers. Hemmi was nicknamed a “Hoover” because when he was tracking, his nose was so close to the ground you could hear him inhaling!
Hemmi’s service continued until 2018 before he eventually retired. In his retirement, Hemmi has chosen to live a simple life. He still carries his favourite Kong toy wherever he goes, and sometimes he will attempt to squeeze one more toy in his mouth.
