Sabre, Regimental #96

Sabre, Regimental #96

PSD Sabre was born in Germany on June 8, 2008. Sabre was partnered with his handler in October of 2009 and comprised the newly re-formed Port Moody Police K-9 Section. Shortly after, the two became a certified K-9 team after completing training in January 2010. This was under then recently retired Sgt. Dave Yurkiw. Dave recently passed and will be missed by the Police K-9 world.

Sabre started his career in Port Moody and slowly taught his human partner how to work as a team. He was instrumental in locating people and items that often didn’t want to be found.

From 2010 to 2014, PSD Sabre and his partner continued to train and certify with the Vancouver Police Department K-9 Section and added certification in a drug and firearms detection profile. Sabre attended the Vancouver Riot in 2010 and shortly thereafter, certified in a Public Safety Unit profile with the Vancouver Police Department.

Sabre and his partner joined the RCMP Lower Mainland District Integrated Police Dog Service Unit in 2014 and served in this unit until he and his partner were retired from the K-9 Unit in 2016.

Sabre enjoyed his retirement and time with the family. Lots of walks with Mom and he especially loved summers at the lake. Unfortunately, in November 2020, Sabre’s health deteriorated due to an injury suffered in the line of duty and he passed away.

Sabre will be truly missed by his partner, family and the communities he served.

“Rest in Peace Sabre, you were the best partner I have ever had the honor of serving with and truly one of a kind!”
