Ralph, Regimental #618-3

PSD Ralph, a distinguished member of the Regina Police Canine Unit, retired in 2025 after a remarkable seven-year career. Born in Czech Republic and acquired from Alabama Canine in 2018 at the age of one, Ralph was partnered with Sgt. Lorence, becoming his third canine companion.

Ralph served diligently in Regina and across southern Saskatchewan, becoming a familiar and respected presence in the community. As a general purpose patrol dog with specialized drug detection cross-training, he was also integrated into SWAT operations, demonstrating his versatility and adaptability.

Throughout his tenure, PSD Ralph amassed dozens upon dozens of arrests, playing a crucial role in maintaining public safety. Beyond his operational duties, he excelled in public education and demonstrations, bringing joy and reassurance to countless children during school and hospital visits.

Ralph’s tracking abilities were second to none. One notable incident involved the pursuit of suspects who had attacked and robbed an elderly man in a large Regina park. Despite the challenging urban environment, with thick bushes and a creek bed, Ralph successfully located the track of a fleeing suspect. His handler trusted his proximity alert, even when the suspect was hidden within dense vegetation. A police canine challenge, followed by Ralph’s assertive bark, led to the suspect’s surrender.

Ralph’s courage was vividly displayed in a near-fatal incident in May 2022. While apprehending a violent sexual assault suspect, he was stabbed multiple times in the neck and shoulder, with additional stabs stopped by his body armor. Undeterred, Ralph continued his pursuit. He recovered fully within six weeks, returning to duty with unwavering dedication. His return was marked by the apprehension of an armed home invasion suspect, demonstrating his resilience and commitment.

One of Ralph’s most significant arrests involved a suspect preparing to commit an armed robbery at a liquor store. When the suspect fled, Ralph was sent to apprehend him. However, his handler recognized the immediate danger of a speeding vehicle. Ralph instantly obeyed the command to call off the pursuit, demonstrating exceptional discipline and saving his own life. Once the roadway was safe, Ralph resumed the chase, apprehending the suspect, who was found to be armed with a hatchet and in full disguise.

Ralph’s career was marked by consistent excellence. He made his first apprehension within three hours of his first shift in 2018, catching a stolen auto/hit and run suspect. His final shift in 2025 saw him apprehend two break and enter suspects, capping a career of outstanding service.

Outside of his duties, Ralph enjoyed dock diving, displaying a playful and spirited nature. He would tirelessly leap into lakes, swimming with more enthusiasm than grace, a beloved sight to those who knew him.

PSD Ralph’s legacy is one of unwavering courage, exceptional skill, and dedicated service. He leaves behind a community grateful for his contributions and a lasting memory of a true hero.
