Tyak is an eleven-year-old German Shepard who was born in Innisfail, Alberta at the RCMP Police Dog Service Training Centre. He was posted in Lower Mainland District, BC, where he worked for his entire career.
Tyak and his handler were paired with the Emergency Response Team and attended many high-risk calls together around the province. The vehicles he rode in were often intentionally rammed by stolen vehicles and Tyak was even stabbed one time while successfully apprehending a violent subject. Though he always made a complete recovery, he does now suffer from arthritis for which he takes medication.
Outside of his regular duties, he was selected to represent the RCMP at various international events including the Olympic Games in Vancouver and the G20 Summit in Toronto. Tyak also frequently helped with explosive detection sweeps to ensure the safety of the Premier of BC.
After working until he was almost nine years old, Tyak retired and continues to live with his handler and family. He is content to stay out of the limelight and now yawns when asked to do something he isn’t particularly interested in at that moment!
