Meet Chase, a German Shepherd born on May 23, 2015, in Frankfurt, Germany, who spent nine incredible years serving the Cape Breton Regional Police Service. Chase isn’t just a retired police dog — he’s a hero with a big heart, a sharp nose, and a knack for keeping everyone on their toes. He spent his entire career with Constable Troy Wadden, tackling everything from tracking suspects through thick brush to finding hidden firearms, and he did it all with determination, loyalty, and a touch of mischief.
Some of Chase’s career highlights are truly legendary. He once tracked a suspect from a heavily contaminated fire scene for kilometers through forests, dirt roads, and railroad tracks, ultimately finding him in a swamp. On another occasion, his incredible nose led him to a duffel bag full of discarded firearms — something that would have gone completely unnoticed without Chase on the case. Even when searching across a frozen lake in the middle of winter for a missing woman, Chase worked tirelessly for more than 20 kilometers, showing that no challenge was too big for him.
Off-duty, Chase’s personality shines even brighter. He once slid open the car door separating him from the driver’s seat and proceeded to honk the horn while his handler was busy — clearly letting everyone know he could multitask! He loves treats, giving slobbery kisses, and making his friends laugh, proving that a retired police dog can still be the life of the party.
Now fully retired, Chase enjoys the quieter life, though he still gets his monthly knee treatments and takes care of his liver with prescribed medication. He may be retired from active duty, but his courage, loyalty, and goofy charm are alive and well — and he continues to bring joy, laughter, and inspiration to everyone around him. Chase is living proof that heroes don’t retire from being lovable, brave, and unforgettable.
