Presenting the legendary, the tenacious, the one and only PSD Felix – a four-legged force of nature who recently hung up his badge (though he still occasionally tries to sniff out contraband in the treat jar)!
Born under the watchful eyes of the RCMP PDSTC, Felix’s early life in Kamloops, BC, was clearly a sign of great things to come. Even as a pup, his dedication was unparalleled. While other youngsters were chewing on furniture, Felix was likely conducting “evidence recovery” missions under the couch. His bond with his handler began early, with Cpl Rob Budvarson taking over his imprinting at approximately one year of age – a partnership that would soon become the stuff of RCMP legend.
Felix’s journey through the Police Dog Service Training Centre wasn’t without its dramatic flair. In the spring of 2015, a minor muscle strain threatened to sideline our hero. But fear not! Like a true Mountie, Felix persevered, undergoing a month of dedicated rehabilitation back in Kamloops before returning to the PDSTC and triumphantly completing his training. This early display of resilience foreshadowed a career marked by unwavering dedication.
For a remarkable five years, Felix served with distinction as a General Duty Dog with a nose for explosives that could rival a high-tech sensor. His talents extended beyond sniffing, however. He bravely ventured into the snowy depths as an Avalanche Search and Rescue specialist and stood shoulder-to-paw with the Emergency Response Team. This wasn’t just a job for Felix; it was a calling, fueled by a high drive and a surprisingly friendly disposition that could charm even the most hardened… suspect. His exceptional skills even earned him a trip to Quebec to assist with security during the G7 Summit – a true international canine diplomat!
Life outside of duty was equally eventful. Felix shared his home with both active and retired police dogs, a testament to his sociable nature. Now enjoying country life with PSD Karma and PSD Lonny, he’s traded chasing criminals for chasing gophers (though his technique remains remarkably similar). Surrounded by his loving family and majestic horses, his retirement is filled with the simple joys of rural living.
Speaking of his remarkable career, let’s delve into some of his most impressive feats:
Imagine the biting chill of Northern BC, temperatures plummeting below -30°C. This was the scene when Felix was called to action after a Failure to Stop for Police and Assault of a Police Officer involving two suspects. Undeterred by the brutal cold, Felix locked onto the scent of the first suspect, tracking him through the unforgiving conditions to a residence where the suspect had foolishly sought refuge. Felix, with his unparalleled determination, located the suspect hiding inside. Not content with one successful apprehension, Felix was immediately deployed to track the second suspect. For a grueling three hours, he navigated the icy forest, his powerful nose leading the team until they located the suspect, suffering from severe hypothermia. Without Felix’s relentless pursuit, the individual would likely have succumbed to the elements – a life undoubtedly saved by a dedicated canine.
In another gripping case in Northern BC, Felix was instrumental in a possible kidnapping investigation. The suspect had fled on foot into the dense bush, his panicked screams echoing through the trees as he repeatedly yelled for the police to end his life. For an extended period, Felix relentlessly tracked the distraught individual. It was Felix who ultimately located the suspect, his calm presence during the arrest undoubtedly contributing to the safety of everyone involved as the highly emotional suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
But perhaps one of the most memorable displays of Felix’s exceptional abilities occurred very early in his career in the rugged mountainous terrain of the Cariboo Region. Faced with a firearms offense, three suspects had vanished into the wilderness. Felix, undaunted by the challenging landscape, tracked through treacherous terrain and even across creeks for approximately three hours. His unwavering focus led the team to a wind-blown down tree pile where all three suspects were found hiding. This early success solidified Felix’s reputation as a rising star in the Police Dog Service, a testament to his innate talent and love for his work.
Behind this incredible canine hero was his dedicated handler, Cpl Rob Budvarson, whose guidance and partnership were undoubtedly integral to Felix’s success.
Now enjoying his golden years, Felix has developed a few endearing quirks. Most notably, he carries his favorite Kong toy around like a treasured soother – a tough-as-nails police dog with a soft spot for his rubber companion.
While Felix lived a life of peak physical performance, like many dedicated athletes, he carries a reminder of his service. The muscle strain injury he sustained early in his training may present challenges in his later retirement years, requiring extra care and attention to ensure his continued comfort.
So let’s raise a paw (or a hand!) to PSD Felix – a true Canadian hero, a master tracker, a brave protector, and a dog who proves that even the most serious crime fighters can have a hilariously adorable side. May his retirement be filled with endless belly rubs, squeaky toys (the non-suspicious kind!), and the comforting presence of his loving family and furry companions. He’s earned it!
