Hawk, Regimental #K904

Hawk, a brindle Dutch Shepherd, began his distinguished journey as a police dog in 2018 with his dedicated handler, Corby Wright, of the Durham Regional Police. From the very start, Hawk was driven by an unwavering energy and a deep desire to serve—always moving at “Dutchie fast” speed and relentlessly eager to put his training into action.

His enthusiasm is legendary; while waiting to train, Hawk would chew or rip through kennels just to get back to work, making him notorious for his unstoppable spirit. He never rested while on patrol – ever alert, vigilant and ready to protect the citizens. Despite being nicknamed “the dog with no soul” during apprehension training, off duty he showed his softer side, seeking pets and affection from his handler.

One of Hawk’s most memorable accomplishments came during a daytime crime spree, when a break-and-enter suspect assaulted a homeowner before fleeing. Hawk picked up the trail and led his team through yards, a ravine, and busy roads, never losing focus even as the chaos unfolded around him. His persistence paid off when he cornered the suspect hiding under a gate, delivering justice in a moment that showcased his skill, drive, and courage.

Another defining moment occurred during a high-stakes pursuit involving a stolen truck and trailer. The chase spanned cities, ending in Toronto, where Hawk sprang into action, apprehending a suspect even as vehicles sped off and danger escalated for canine and human members. Despite being dragged by the fleeing truck, Hawk held his ground, responding instantly to his handler’s commands and helping to bring the suspects to justice. His bravery and intense focus during this incident highlighted his irreplaceable role in law enforcement.

Beyond his tracking and apprehension skills, Hawk excelled in narcotics and firearms detection, contributing significantly to community safety. He continues to bring joy and laughter to his handler’s life. He reliably sounds the breakfast and dinner bell by barking at every mealtime, right on time every time; and despite having had his tail removed, he still shows his excitement by wiggling his entire backside!

Thankfully, Hawk currently enjoys good health, with no present conditions affecting his well-deserved retirement years. His legacy is one of relentless service, unwavering loyalty, and fearless dedication—a true hero whose story inspires us all.
