Born at the RCMP Police Dog Service Training Centre in Innisfail, AB, Jasper was paired with his handler at just 10 months old. Nine years and thousands of miles later, this remarkable German Shepherd has officially retired from the RCMP!
A general duty K9 specializing in explosive detection, Jasper spent his career securing venues for VIPs, supporting Emergency Response Teams, and serving across Canada—primarily in Quebec and Ontario.
From rappelling down buildings attached to his handler to riding in assault boats through the worst possible water conditions, Jasper took every high-risk deployment in stride. Not once did he complain. He just got the job done.
At the Canada/US border, Jasper became a legend for tracking suspects over vast distances. During one memorable marathon track, when almost everyone else had given up and left the scene, Jasper kept his nose to the ground. Hours later, he proved once again why you never doubt a police dog: the call went out to bring the team back because Jasper had found his subject.
Off-duty, Jasper’s favorite mission is finding water and getting in it. If there’s a lake or river nearby, his handler usually hears the splash before even reaching the bank, only to find Jasper swimming in circles or patiently waiting for someone to throw a stick.
Jasper recently underwent emergency surgery to remove a large abdominal tumor, along with his spleen and part of his intestine. He is currently back home, resting and recovering with the love of his family. Thanks to the support of the Ned’s Wish community, Jasper will have every resource needed as he navigates his recovery and health in retirement.
Jasper, you have been the definition of loyalty, courage, and resilience. Thank you for nine years of heroic service to Canada.
Welcome to the Ned’s Wish family, big guy. We are all fighting in your corner, and we wish you a smooth recovery and plenty of swims ahead!
