The team at Ned’s Wish is PAWsitively thrilled to welcome PSD Jeff to retirement! 🐾💙
Born May 24, 2016, through the RCMP breeding program, Jeff was recruited by the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) in 2017. In May 2019, he was paired with Constable Joannie Boulanger, and together they began training in general patrol duties and narcotics detection. They officially hit the streets as a police canine team in January 2020. 🚔🐕
It didn’t take Jeff long to prove he was made for the job. During only their second shift together, he successfully tracked and located a suspect who had fled after stealing a vehicle. It was the first of many successful searches throughout his impressive career.
One particularly memorable track began after two suspects fled from a stolen vehicle into a busy residential neighbourhood. Officers believed they knew which direction the suspects had gone, but Jeff strongly disagreed. Trusting her partner, Joannie followed his lead in the opposite direction. Less than 20 metres later, Jeff located both suspects hiding behind a backyard shed. When one fled again, Jeff immediately picked up the track and found him hiding beneath a concrete balcony. 👃🐾
During another investigation, Jeff was tasked with locating narcotics hidden somewhere on a property. After clearing the house, he alerted on a recycling bin containing garbage and a bag of dog food. When the bin appeared empty, Jeff was allowed to continue searching—but he returned to the exact same spot and indicated again. True to form, Jeff was right. The narcotics had been wrapped in plastic and hidden at the bottom of the dog food bag.
Jeff also proved his incredible tracking ability following a break-in at a vehicle storage facility. Despite officers having searched for more than an hour, Jeff quickly picked up a track. He located over 50 stolen catalytic converters and the tools used to remove them before continuing more than 800 metres through the property. By the end of the search, Jeff had found all three suspects—two hiding inside a storage compartment and a third underneath a trailer. 🚨
On another track, Jeff recovered a duffel bag containing more than $75,000 worth of stolen jewelry. The discovery allowed investigators to connect two suspects to a residential break and enter and ultimately led to their arrests. 💎
Jeff truly lived to work. Although he was always happy to receive his ball, the search itself was his greatest reward. Tracking fleeing suspects was his absolute favourite part of the job, and no cozy bed or swim in the lake could compete with the excitement of putting his nose to work. 🎾
Around the age of five, Jeff developed food and environmental allergies that required specialized veterinary care. Excessive scratching caused an ear hematoma, leaving one ear permanently folded over and giving this accomplished 10-year-old police dog the adorable look of a puppy. 🥹
Today, Jeff is slowly adjusting to a retirement that came a little too soon for his liking. He is learning to enjoy comfortable beds, quiet afternoons and leisurely walks—but trips to the family cottage are another story. The moment he arrives, he heads straight for the lake, and once he is in, good luck getting him back out! 🌊
Jeff’s other great loves are watermelon and apples. He can be asleep or playing across the yard, but the second someone cuts into either one, he magically appears to request his share—gently pawing or whistling until they give in. 🍉🍎
He also enjoys his own version of keep-away with his Kong. Jeff will proudly drop it at someone’s feet, wait until they reach for it, then snatch it back with a playful growl. Apparently, letting the human actually have the toy would ruin the whole damn game! 😂
After seven years of waking up ready to serve, Jeff has more than earned the chance to put his paws up. 🐾
Welcome to retirement, Jeff! Thank you for your years of dedicated service. We wish you plenty of lake days, cozy naps, watermelon and well-deserved adventures throughout this next chapter. 💙
