Kal, Regimental #1101

Every great police dog starts somewhere. For PSD Kal, it started in Innisfail in 2017 as an eight-week-old bundle of fluff, boundless energy, and absolutely no concept of “calm.” Fortunately for everyone (except perhaps a few fleeing suspects), his handler, Paul Baker, was “stuck” with him from puppyhood through training, and the pair officially became operational after graduating the RCMP Police Dog Handler Course in 2019.

From that moment on, Kal made quite the impression. Around the kennel he was a favourite with fellow members. Out on the street? Not so much if you happened to be running from the police. Over the course of a remarkable seven-year career, Kal recorded more than 100 successful captures, serving with the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Section, spending six years alongside the Emergency Response Team (ERT), and finishing his career in beautiful Squamish, where he traded city streets for mountain views.

One of Kal’s most memorable lessons wasn’t for a suspect—it was for his handler. During a track in Squamish, Kal confidently indicated that the suspect had crossed a river. Paul, relying on his very human logic, spent precious time searching the wrong side while Kal patiently insisted, in classic police dog fashion, “Trust me, he’s over there.” Once they crossed the water, Kal immediately picked up the trail again and led officers straight to a marina, where the suspect had broken into a boat and hidden inside. It was another successful apprehension—and another reminder that sometimes the smartest member of the team has four legs.

Kal also knew how to finish strong. His final deployment with the Emergency Response Team involved assisting in the arrest of a suspect wanted for kidnapping and second-degree murder. When the suspect made the predictable decision to run, Kal made the equally predictable decision to catch him. Seconds later, the pursuit was over. It was a textbook apprehension and a fitting finale to an exceptional operational career.

Retirement, however, has been… a work in progress. Kal remains convinced that every time the work truck leaves the driveway, someone has forgotten to invite him. His enthusiastic howls are his daily reminder that he still considers himself gainfully employed. Between swim sessions, endless games of fetch, and enthusiastically demolishing his favourite bones, Kal is slowly learning that retirement isn’t so bad. Perhaps the most surprising chapter of his story is that this formidable 80-pound German Shepherd’s best friend is a tiny 14-year-old Toy Australian Shepherd—proof that even the toughest police dogs know friendship comes in all sizes.

Thank you, PSD Kal, for seven years of unwavering loyalty, courage, and service. You protected your community, backed your team without hesitation, and reminded all of us that sometimes the best decisions come from trusting the dog. Enjoy your well-earned retirement—you’ve certainly earned every swim, every bone, and yes… even a few dramatic driveway serenades.
