Meet PSD Kane, a German Shepherd born on May 20, 2017, in Innisfail, Alberta — destined to be more than just any good boy. Kane joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) world when he was imprinted in Moncton, New Brunswick, and began official dog training in April 2019 with his handler, Cpl. Richard Bushey. After graduating in August 2019, Kane kicked off his career in H Division in Nova Scotia.
In February 2020, Kane and his handler transferred to Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland. He also traveled to Montreal, Quebec, to support operations during the 15th United Nations Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) — a major international summit held in December 2022 that brought together nearly 200 countries. In 2023, Kane returned to H Division, where he continued to serve until his retirement in September 2025 at eight years old.
Kane’s career was packed with standout moments. On one harrowing call to a fatal collision scene, the suspect fled into dense woods. Despite thick forest, river crossings, and more than 2 km of rough terrain, Kane followed the trail to an old cabin and located the suspect — allowing medical aid and a safe arrest. On another intense incident, the team assisted the Emergency Response Team (ERT) with a suspect armed with a firearm who had disappeared into the woods. Kane picked up a several-hour-old trail, tracked it down, and found a discarded firearm, lying down on it to alert members so it could be safely secured.
Kane didn’t just track people — he protected them. He was often part of protective search operations during visits from high-profile leaders, including the Prime Minister of Canada and the Chancellor of Germany, as well as crowd safety work at major events such as COP15 and NHL games in Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Away from work, Kane had a big personality: he loved to “sing” along with sirens and train whistles, and his affectionate smooches for his best friend, Marlow, were legendary.
Now fully retired, Kane enjoys his well-earned rest, but his courage, loyalty, and goofy charm have left a lasting impression on everyone he worked with. Welcome to the pack Kane!
