Police Service Dog Kilo was born at the RCMP’s Police Service Dog Training Centre in Innisfail, Alberta on June 15, 2017. Kilo then traveled to Quebec, where he lived and trained with an RCMP member who was imprinting him for potential Police Service Dog work. Kilo returned to Innisfail where he and his handler were partnered up. The duo began training and successfully became a Specialty Narcotics Detection team in 2018. Kilo was a single profile dog.
Kilo and his partner were an extremely successful team, working together to stop the flow of contraband from entering communities throughout Canada, many of which were destined for Saskatchewan. Together, they seized over $22 million in illegal contraband, including drugs, currency and firearms, many of which were hidden in sophisticated hidden compartments.
In 2023, Kilo sniffed out four kilograms of methamphetamine from a vehicle during a traffic stop near Maidstone, Saskatchewan. A cell phone was seized for the drug investigation and a search warrant was obtained. Evidence of sexual offences against children were discovered, and search warrants in both Saskatchewan and Alberta resulted in two young victims being identified and saved from further harm.
Kilo and his handler seized countless kilograms of drugs including cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl and cannabis during their six years working on the roadways in Saskatchewan, as well as five illegally possessed handguns. They also were responsible for seizing about $1 million in currency that was from the proceeds of crime, including drug trafficking.
Kilo absolutely hates getting bathed! He has a habit of trying to eat the hose of the blow dryer when getting dried off after a bath. He loves suntanning and would spend warm prairie summers in his dog run taking in the sun. Kilo loves sticking his butt in the air, his shoulder on the ground and wagging his tail high in the air when he is playing.
Kilo is now retired and living with his adopted family in the Regina area. Kilo initially had some difficulty maintaining weight, but after a vet consultation his diet was switched to hypoallergenic food and he has had no subsequent problems. Enjoy your retirement Kilo. After such an impressive career you definitely deserve to kick back and enjoy some suntanning under that “Land of Living Skies” prairie sun!!
