PSD Kitzel has been an extraordinary partner, with a remarkable ability to switch work mode on and off.
PSD Kitzel began his career in Nova Scotia before moving to Alberta. His work included tracking suspects in extreme conditions, such as a grueling 12-kilometer pursuit through fields, swamps, and woods in -40°C weather, after which they had to hike another 4 kms out.
In 2021, he successfully located a hidden rifle used in a robbery, buried under a tree in a farmyard. In another memorable moment, Kitzel tracked a suspect into a chest-deep swamp in Rocky Mountain House, where the individual was found submerged with only his nose visible.
PSD Kitzel loved work and no matter the time or weather, he was spinning when he knew it was time to go – even one day when he and his handler answered 7 calls in 16 hours!
PSD Kitzel faced some tough moments in his career, sustaining several injuries including multiple stab wounds, a bout of GVD, and chronic back issues. Despite these lasting health challenges, he has transitioned to retirement with grace and now enjoys a happy life at home with his family and best friend, Charlie the pomsky.
At home, he makes sure to clear rooms before his handler enters and chases away anyone who comes to the door. When not patrolling the home, you may find him relaxing on his back with all 4 paws in the air or making himself comfortable by impersonating a lap dog.
PSD Kitzel has been with Cst. Reid since he was 8 months old and will remain with him until his end.
