Kola, Regimental #1097

ed’s Wish gives a heartfelt howl of appreciation to PSD Kola, who has had an incredible career with the RCMP!

PSD Kola began his training in 2019 in the Lower Mainland alongside his first handler. Tragically, a training accident left his handler with injuries that made continuing their work together impossible. Fortunately, Kola’s journey didn’t end there—he soon found a new partner, ready and eager to take on the next chapter with him.

In 2020, Kola and his handler were transferred to the G Division, where they were stationed in Yellowknife. As one of only two police dogs in the division, PSD Kola embraced the role and was ready to serve and protect. PSD Kola embraced the dramatic shift from warm, grassy landscapes and bustling citywide calls to the harsh realities of the North—plunging temperatures of -40°C, icy roads, and fierce Arctic winds. Undeterred, Kola quickly adapted to his new environment, growing a thick coat and proving his resilience in the face of the elements.

Kola had many calls for service, one specifically was on a late winter night, Kola was called upon to assist general duty members in Yellowknife for two suspects who had run from police after pulling out a handgun. The temperatures were well below -30 and the two suspects had fled down a well-known alleyway which was covered in hard packed snow and ice. Kola was deployed and immediately indicated on a track down the alleyway. The track went through multiple yards, street crossings, and a portion of the Canadian shield which was covered in deep snow. Kola tracked through all these hard elements and ended up at a well-known building. The track ended at an open basement apartment window. It was definite that the suspects had fled into the apartment and were hiding refusing to come out. Kola kept watch on the open window for several hours before the Emergency Response Team arrived and assisted with the search and arrest of the two suspects.

Another incredible call for service PSD Kola was involved in was a suspicious package at one of the airlines. Kola was tasked to sniff out multiple boxes which were destined for communities around the NWT. Kola indicated on one box and once opened by investigators there was a lunch bag full of candy with 240 grams of crack cocaine! The sugary sweets did not fool Kola’s nose!

Now retired, Kola enjoys lounging indoors on his cozy new bed, relishing precious family moments with the kids. Whether it’s ice fishing, trekking through nature, or splashing in the water alongside his favorite dog pal, Sawyer, Kola is embracing every joyful moment of his well-deserved retirement.

Welcome to the pack Kola!
