Myke is a Belgian Malinois who was born in the Netherlands on November 12th, 2014.
Myke arrived in Canada and started training with the Lethbridge Police Service in September 2016. In early 2017, Myke graduated and started protecting the streets of Lethbridge. Myke attended the Canadian Police Canine Association Trials in 2017 and won first place for Evidence Search. Myke retired in April 2024 after a 7-year career serving the citizens of Lethbridge.
Myke was called out on a day off to assist with a stolen potato chip truck that was abandoned when patrol members attempted to stop it. Myke arrived and started tracking. The Patrol guys located a suspect but Myke started tracking away from where that suspect was being detained. Myke tracked to some bushes where he apprehended the actual subject involved with the stolen vehicle. Myke knew best!!
On another shift, a subject broke into several car dealerships. The subject rammed into several police vehicles while fleeing. With help of the RCMP, a tire deflation device was successfully deployed and the driver subsequently fled on foot. An RCMP K9 team took over the track and searched for over 90 minutes. Myke switched out where the RCMP team had left off and quickly indicated on a garage the subject had broken into. Myke and his team apprehended the subject after the guy refused to come out.
While on shift, Myke stopped for a bathroom break while patrolling in a Lethbridge industrial area. Myke picked up the odor of a subject who had broken into an adjacent fenced compound. Without any search command or direction, Myke alerted his handler to the break and enter. By the time the K9 team could get into the compound, the subject had found a vehicle to hide in, but Myke still found the guy’s hiding spot. You couldn’t hide from Myke!!
Myke loved going into the office patrol area when members were working. He would go from member to member for belly rubs and to steal their lunches–not many would fight to get their food back!! At the end of his shift, Myke would go into the Canine office and curl up on the couch. If anyone else was on the couch, he would still curl up, trying to push them off. It will forever be considered “Myke’s couch”.
Myke was pretty hard on his teeth throughout his career. Myke had a canine tooth capped early into his career, and had additional significant dental work done over the years.
Despite a very active working career Myke is in generally good health. Enjoy your retirement Myke. You definitely deserve to spend more time on your couch!!
