Pension, Regimental #K97

Meet PSD Pension — the only member of the Halifax Regional Police Service to retire with an actual pension, thanks to Ned’s Wish. His human partner, Cst. Jason Meisner, retired at the same time, but unfortunately for Jason, belly rubs, unlimited fetch, and medical coverage were not included in his retirement package.

PSD Pension proudly served the Halifax Regional Municipality of Nova Scotia for five action-packed years. A happy, balanced, and highly motivated Police Service Dog, Pension had one true passion in life: using his nose — and making suspects regret skipping cardio.

Fast, focused, and full of energy, Pension kept his handler in excellent shape throughout their career together. Whether it was operational deployments, training days, evidence searches, missing persons calls, or assisting specialized teams like ERT, Pension approached every task with the same enthusiasm and determination. Jason considers himself fortunate to have finished his policing career with such an exceptional partner… after all, he retired with two pensions.

One of Pension’s most memorable early calls involved tracking multiple suspects who had fled after a reckless driving spree, robbery, and province-wide police chase ended in a crash. Under cover of darkness, Pension tracked the suspects through woods, boulder fields, sidewalks, gas stations, graveyards, apartment lots, and city streets before cornering them inside an apartment building. Witnesses watched the suspects frantically run up and down stairwells looking for escape routes — only to discover Pension calmly waiting at the end of the hallway like the world’s furriest tax auditor collecting overdue payments.

Tracking was always Pension’s favourite job, and distractions meant nothing to him. Other dogs barked, lunged, and begged for attention as he passed by on operational tracks, but Pension stayed laser-focused on the mission. In fact, several impressed pet dogs abandoned their owners entirely to join Pension’s “work convoy,” while Jason followed behind whispering his trademark encouragement: “Gooooood Boy……”

Off duty, Pension remains committed to the important work of supervising family activities from directly underfoot. He loves spending time outdoors, especially at camp riding in the SXS, where he enthusiastically fetches anything thrown on land or water before recharging in the sun or beside the wood stove. At home, he can often be found sitting in the back of the SXS, hoping someone accidentally starts it and takes him back to camp.

Like many hardworking police dogs, Pension carries a few service-related injuries into retirement, including hind leg and knee injuries, past Lyme disease, and recurring skin conditions. But none of it has slowed down his enthusiasm for family, adventure, or attention.

Welcome to the pack and to your retirement, PSD Pension — you earned every treat, every nap, and every penny of your pension.
