Recon is a remarkable 11-year-old Belgian Malinois whose loyalty and courage have left an indelible mark on the Halifax Regional Police. Throughout his impressive nine-year service, Recon stood on the front lines, playing a pivotal role in countless arrests and critical operations. In addition to exceling in patrol duties, he also employed the complex skill of explosives detection.
One of Recon’s most impressive feats came when he tracked a despondent adult male for an incredible eight hours. Braving cold, wet, and densely wooded winter terrain, PSD Recon led his handler, CST Jamie Cooke, and RCMP member TJ Reid, who served as cover officer, through a lengthy and arduous journey. Thanks to Recon’s relentless drive and keen senses, the Ground Search and Rescue team was able to follow his lead, contain the search area, and ultimately locate the individual—bringing relief to all involved.
One story of bravery stands out – a 2km pursuit through an industrial park. The fugitive was linked to armed robberies, car chases, and ramming police vehicles. Undeterred by hard surfaces, temporary loss of the trail, and time-lapse, Recon refused to give in. With sheer perseverance, he picked up the trail again and guided officers to the suspect, who was hidden—locked inside a dump truck, completely out of sight. Where human senses failed, Recon’s extraordinary nose succeeded. He signalled persistently, and, thanks to his determination, the police were able to breach the hiding place and apprehend the individual, making the community safer for everyone.
Yet Recon’s greatest act of heroism transcends crime-fighting. His most touching mission was fulfilling the heartfelt wish of a young boy in the local children’s hospital. During the challenging days of Covid, when in-person visits were nearly impossible, Recon and his team worked with the hospital staff to sneak inside and brighten the life of a very sick child. Recon’s gentle nature shone as he cuddled with the boy and gifted him a stuffed police dog for comfort and protection. The boy named his new companion “Spirit” – a name so meaningful, it would later be given to Recon’s little brother, CST Cooke’s new K9 partner. In that moment, Recon brought joy and hope, showing that true heroism lies in kindness as much as courage.
Throughout his working years, Recon could never be contained—no kennel could hold him, as he would always find a way out! Now, in his well-deserved retirement, Recon remains a cherished and respected figure in the community. Though he faces the occasional heat rash and the common aches that come with a life of service, he continues to inspire everyone with his resilience and spirit. Recon’s legacy is not just in the arrests made or lives saved—it’s in the hearts he touched, and the enduring example of loyalty and heroism he set for all.
