Sammy, Regimental #2032

Calgary Police Service | Retired Police Service Dog

Born on March 16, 2015, in the Netherlands, Sammy is a retired Dutch Shepherd who proudly served seven years with the Calgary Police Service, protecting Calgary and surrounding communities with unwavering dedication.

Throughout his career, Sammy was a patrol canine. His focus and reliability made him an invaluable partner on countless high-risk calls.

One of the most defining moments of Sammy’s career occurred in 2025, when he was the lead Police Service Dog during the arrest of an armed offender who had committed a shooting in Calgary. After the suspect fled in a stolen vehicle and later foot—tracked with the assistance of HAWC air support—Sammy and his handler strategically positioned themselves to intercept him. When the offender attempted to escape again, Sammy was deployed and successfully apprehended him. During the arrest, Sammy struck an assault rifle concealed in the suspect’s pant leg, shearing off one of his canines in the process. Despite the injury, he completed the apprehension, helping ensure the safety of officers and the community.

Another memorable highlight came during his final call with the Tactical Unit. Following a breach and deployment of distraction devices, Sammy was tasked with clearing a bedroom where an offender was actively hiding. With confidence and precision, he located the suspect concealed under a bed, removed him, and brought him safely to Tactical members for arrest.

Sammy worked alongside S/Sgt Derek Klassen, his original handler for 18 months, and Cst Jason MacGregor, who remained his handler until retirement.

Now fully retired, Sammy remains in excellent health aside from dental treatment related to his line-of-duty injury. Off duty, he is affectionately described as a “classic urchin,” known for his quirky personality, love of rolling around whenever he gets the chance, and slightly cross-eyed expression that only adds to his charm.

Sammy’s career may have ended—but his legacy is one of loyalty, bravery, and steadfast protection of the Calgary community.

Welcome to the pack Sammy, enjoy your well-earned retirement!
