Tribute for Hawk

It is with profound respect and admiration that we pay tribute to PSD Hawk, a remarkable dog whose life of service has left an indelible mark on countless lives. Hawk departed this world in August 2024, having lived a full and impactful 14 years.

Hawk’s journey of service began in 2013 with the Calgary Police Service Victim Assistance Support Team (VAST). For nearly eight years, Hawk served tirelessly as an Accredited Facility Dog, Trauma Dog, and Court Support Dog, providing unwavering emotional support to vulnerable victims and witnesses in court.

Hawk’s pioneering contributions to the legal system are unparalleled. In 2014, a special hearing of the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench recognized Hawk as a “Support Person” – this first dog in Canada to earn this designation. This monumental decision allowed Hawk to provide courtroom support for an 8-year-old sexual assault victim, setting a precedent that has since enabled other victims of crime to receive the support they need during trials.

Even after retirement from VAST in 2021, Hawk continued to serve his community with the same enthusiasm. Every Wednesday during the school year, Hawk volunteered at Calgary’s Our Lady of Grace School, bringing joy to young children with his endearing habit of greeting them with a stuffed toy and engaging in his favorite game, “tug of war.”

Hawk’s life of service, dedication, and love has touched the hearts of many, and his memory will live on as a beacon of hope and comfort. Hawk’s legacy as the first VAST K9 Trauma Dog and his role in pioneering courtroom support for victims will forever be remembered.

Thank you, Hawk, for your unparalleled service and for being a source of strength and solace to those in need. Your legacy will forever be cherished.
