Tribute to Ronin

Remembering legendary PSD Ronin, a German Shepherd with a tale as thrilling as any action movie! Born in the Czech Republic on October 10th, 2005, this four-legged hero, RCMP badge number 765, was destined for greatness. He was not just any dog; he was Ronin, an RCMP powerhouse.

Immigrated in 2007, Ronin teamed up with Constable Brent Bates in the bustling Lower Mainland of B.C. After graduating from the prestigious Police Dog Service Training Centre, they hit the ground running, serving the South Fraser Integrated PDS with unwavering dedication. From 2007 to 2009, they were a force to be reckoned with. Then, adventure called, and they headed east to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where Ronin continued his impressive career until his well-earned retirement in 2011.

For four years, Ronin served with distinction, leaving a trail of impressive accomplishments in his wake. He was not just good; he was exceptional.

Ronin’s Greatest Hits:

  • The Marshland Miracle: Picture this: a distraught teenager, lost in a treacherous marshland, with the Coast Guard’s Sea King helicopters circling overhead. After four grueling hours, Ronin’s nose led him straight to her, hidden under an embankment, hypothermic but alive. This was not just a search; it was a life-saving mission.
  • VIP Security Extraordinaire: Ronin wasn’t just about catching criminals; he was also a master of explosives detection. He protected dignitaries like the Prime Minister, the Queen, and Prince William and Kate. And let’s not forget his role in safeguarding the Olympic Village in Whistler during the 2010 Winter Games, ensuring the athletes’ safety.
  • The Graveyard Chase: Ronin tracked a murder suspect from a gruesome crime scene, through break-in attempts, and into a graveyard. Even when the suspect tried to flee, Ronin’s determination prevailed, apprehending him with the murder weapon still in hand.
  • The Frostbite Track: Imagine tracking a suspect for 7 kilometers through thick woods in -18°C weather! Ronin did just that, leading to the suspect’s arrest, albeit with a trip to the hospital for frostbite. But that was not all! After capturing the suspect, they had to backtrack to find their lost colleague who could not keep up in the extreme conditions.

Ronin had a quirky and hilarious habit of “chasing” oncoming cars from the back window of the police cruiser. Imagine a powerful German Shepherd lunging and barking at passing vehicles, all from the safety of his ride!

Ronin faced his share of challenges. He broke a canine tooth during training, requiring a titanium replacement. And in 2009, he developed lumbosacral disease, necessitating spinal surgery. Though he recovered and served for two more years, he had to retire early.

Ronin’s story is a testament to the unwavering dedication and exceptional abilities of police dogs. He was more than just a working dog; he was a hero, a partner, and a loyal friend. Though no longer with us, Ronin’s legacy lives on as a reminder of the incredible bond between a handler and his canine partner. Ronin, you will always remain a legend and Ned’s Wish Hero.
