Imagine a life dedicated to protecting our communities and country facing danger head-on, and then, suddenly, retirement arrives. For Police and Military Service Dogs (PSDs), this transition can be challenging, both physically and emotionally. Sadly, for some, like Calgary Police Service Dog, Axel, retirement was tragically short, due to complications of an acute intestinal disease.
That’s why we’re launching this Fundraiser to build Axel’s House, a dedicated decompression and re-homing facility in support of Ned’s Wish, named in loving memory of Axel.
Since Ned’s Wish inception, we have recognized a critical need that has steadily been increasing to provide a safe, supportive space for retired PSDs to transition to civilian life. These incredible dogs deserve a place to decompress, receive necessary medical care, and find loving forever homes.
What is Axel’s House?
Axel’s House will be more than just a shelter. It will be a sanctuary offering:
- Short-term Boarding: A calm and secure environment for retired PSDs awaiting their forever families.
- Essential Medical Care: Ensuring each dog receives up-to-date vaccinations, parasite control, and proper nutrition.
- Behavioral Evaluations: Helping to understand each dog’s unique needs and match them with the perfect homes.
- Trained Volunteer Support: Dedicated individuals providing personalized care and attention.
- Re-homing Services: Facilitating ethical and loving adoptions.
