Ezzy was born in Innisfail, Alberta, to Fritz and Aysha on September 15, 2012. She began her career as an explosive detection dog, and her smaller size made her ideal for crawling into confined spaces, searching under airplane seats, and being easily lifted over fences. Muscular and agile, she was a true “fur missile,” combining speed and dexterity. Ezzy was, without a doubt, the “Sporty Spice” of the dog world.
Ezzy contributed greatly to the RCMP as both a working dog and a brood for their breeding program. She was selected to produce several litters of potential police service dogs, thanks to her exceptional working traits and outstanding genetics. Her qualities eventually transitioned her to the RCMP’s breeding program, where she left a lasting legacy.
In November 2017, Ezzy retired from service and found a loving new home to enjoy her golden years. She quickly became known for her tireless enthusiasm for playing fetch, often outlasting everyone else with her boundless energy. Ezzy also loved hiking in the Rockies, where she would double or triple the distance by sprinting ahead and running back, wondering why her people were taking so long. All the while carrying the largest stick she could find and making sure to hit every one on the legs as she sprinted by.
During her retirement, Ezzy sometimes accompanied her new family to Calgary Police Headquarters, where her gentle nature and love of meeting new people made her something of a celebrity. Later, when her family retired from the Calgary Police Service and moved to an acreage, Ezzy embraced the freedom of country life. She thrived in the company of her four dog friends, including two springers and Nelly, another retired RCMP police dog.
2024 was a year of many changes, but nothing could prepare us for the heartbreak of saying goodbye to our faithful companion of seven wonderful years. Esmeralda (Ezzy), I can only hope we gave you the retirement you so richly deserved. Rest in peace, my sweet girl.
