Cairo, Regimental #1075

PSD Cairo: A Hero on Alberta Streets

Cairo, née Janga, is a 9-year-old German Shepherd who dedicated his 7-year RCMP career to keeping Alberta communities safe. Born on November 28, 2016, at the RCMP Kennels, Cairo spent his entire career singularly committed to the duty of narcotics detection. His journey began in 2018 when he teamed up with Cst Dave Ling following the legalization of cannabis. Together they seized illegal assets worth millions of dollars.

In 2021, Cairo was re-teamed with Cst Tyler Penner, and their partnership continued to yield impressive results. One notable incident occurred in October 2024, when Cst Penner stopped a vehicle near Hinton, AB. Cairo was deployed on the exterior of the vehicle and indicated the presence of a narcotic odor. This led to the discovery of 68kg of cocaine and a loaded 9mm handgun! Cairo’s efforts have been instrumental in seizing a number of types of contraband – including firearms and illicit drugs – ensuring the safety of Alberta communities from illegal drugs and related criminal activity.

Now that he’s retired, Cairo takes his job of being a beloved companion very seriously; he leaves the quirky behaviour to others. Remarkably, he has had no health issues to date.

We wish Cairo a long, healthy, and happy retirement after so many years of successful, dedicated service!
